Training

I deliver keynote talks and workshops on a range of topics, from burnout prevention and dealing with stress, through to adolescent development.

Supervision

I support a range of professionals through supervision- psychologists, interns (new-grads), social workers, counsellors.

Some seek support on the topics covered in my e-book here.

Session are a practical space to slow down, make sense of what’s happening, and choose next steps that fit with your values and how you want to be.

Why Matt for therapy?

I’ve got my own story. Even as a psychologist I don’t like to be put “in a box” – and I bet you don’t either. I love music (I’m a Muso), art, tattoos (I collect them) and good conversation (I listen pretty good), and I’m all about creating a safe space for you to find your next steps.

What to expect

First session

We clarify what’s bringing you in, what you want to be different, and what has or hasn’t helped so far.

Shared plan

We agree on a focus and what progress will look like in practical terms

Tools + next steps

Sessions typically include skills, reflection, and (if useful) small tasks between sessions.

Impartial!

Matt listened and helped contextualise what was going on. He helped facilitate our group through a very tricky time, and was a constant impartial voice helping us re-focus and re-connect.

Highly recommend!

I was so impressed with your message – particularly well suited to an audience constantly trying to get through the workload without burnout.

I have been approached by so many who really enjoyed not just your ‘Keynote’ but also got a lot out of your workshop. I’m not surprised by their responses – your knack for putting others at ease and offering meaningful solutions is a real talent.

Life saving!

A bit out of the blue, but thanks. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you. You helped me figure out what I could do, even with all the mistakes I made.

Thank you for your response. ✨

My Tauranga office is located First Floor, 113 Newton Street, Mount Maunganui. Yes- the big pink Bake Boss building.

Not if you don’t want to. Most people I see have gone through difficult things in their lives. But just because you have something you’re wrestling with now, doesn’t mean it’s linked to the things in your past. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. You have choices and you don’t always need to interrogate the past to move forward.

When you see a therapist, sometimes it is funded and sometimes you will have to pay yourself. It can be complicated to understand but here’s the basics: different therapists are signed up for different contracts- whether it’s ACC (concussion, sensitive claims, work place injuries etc), EAP (your workplace signs up), private health insurance, or your local Te Whatu Ora/Health New Zealand services.

If your workplace uses EAP services through Clearhead, then you can sign up to see me and your workplace will cover the costs for a number of sessions. If you have health insurance, then contact them and ask what your options are- often they will let you see whoever you want, and the therapist will deal directly with the health insurance company.

Otherwise, you may see me via ACC (talk to your ACC recovery partner) or paying yourself.

If you are looking for low cost/free local services then there are two main options I know of. The first is through your G.P and Te Whatu Ora (click here). Usually this starts with a G.P appointment and they can refer you to a range of options. The second options in Tauranga/Bay of Plenty are through these providers, depending on what’s going on for you- FamilyLink , Breast Cancer NZ , Gumboot Friday (for under 24’s), Grief Support , and St Peters House (all issues).

I started doing more of this work after repeatedly seeing small business owners who were “successful on paper” but quietly running on fumes. The same pattern kept showing up: owners carry the risk, the decisions, and the people-management, and they stay switched on long after everyone else has clocked off. Often they only reach out once the wheels start wobbling or the wheels fall off: sleep worsens, patience thins, relationships get strained, and decision-making becomes reactive then BANG.

This coaching is similar to therapy in that it’s a regular, confidential catch-up with a registered psychologist. It’s different in that we don’t necessarily go deep into your personal inner world unless it’s directly relevant. Instead, we stay practical and present-focused: clarity on what matters most right now, decision-making under pressure, leadership strengths and blind spots, difficult conversations and accountability, delegation and the owner bottleneck, and building a sustainable rhythm across seasons and sprints so the business doesn’t slowly cost you your health.

Because the focus is on your effectiveness and sustainability as a business owner (leadership, performance, boundaries, and team systems), many clients treat this as business-related professional development and training. You may wish to confirm with your accountant for your situation.

Most people I see for therapy have a total of anywhere from 4-10 sessions. Others shorter, others much longer. It really depends on what’s going on for you.

At the start, I usually advise we catch up fortnightly for 3-4 times (or weekly if you’re in real distress). After things have settled, we space things out. Often this can look like monthly catchups for another few times and then move to three monthly or six monthly.

So, if you had a total of 10 sessions it could look something like: 3-4 weekly or fortnightly;  3-4 monthly sessions; 2-3 sessions three-monthly.

My sessions are typically 60 minutes, but I do have longer options available, for example my “walk n talk” option.

Typical session: 60 minutes. In-person or online video call. $215 for therapy, $250 executive coaching.

Walk ‘n Talk: 90 minutes in-person. Typically clients like to meet at the Mount and walk around it, or somewhere on the beach. Occasionally I also meet on Daisy Hardwick or another boardwalk of your choice. $325.

We can do one session-by-session schedule, or an annual package. I recommend in-person catch ups, but online are available.
